The fair-headed man spoke up. “Mr. Gregoris has answered enough questions. He had been through a great ordeal, he is tired, and in his doctor’s instructions he intends taking a few weeks’ R and R. End of interview.”

It was strange seeing another man speaking for Leon, and even stranger that Leon had allowed him to. But seeing Leon finally put Bea’s mind at rest, even if it was just on the television. Leaning forward, she picked up the glass from the floor, got up and headed for the kitchen. A glimmer of a smile tipped the corners of her full mouth but did not quite reach her eyes. Trust Leon; captured and shorn, he could still put the most gorgeous female the very next day.

The following day, her house was clean, her washing done, and it was barely noon. Bea strolled into her bedroom, the rest of the weekend stretching before her as a total blank. She straightened the coverlet on the bed, not that it needed it, and wandered around aimlessly. She opened the wardrobe door. Yes! She decided on impulse, and half and hour later was dressed in her blue suit, sans blouse, but with the sapphire and diamond pendant Leon had given her for her birthday around her neck.

She left her house and hailed a cab. Settling in the back seat, she said to the driver, “Knightsbridge, please.” She was going to act on Leon’s advise and go on a shopping spree! Harrods and Harvey Nichols, here I come...

Five hours latter, a tired but happy Bea stepped out of a cab about fifty yards from her building. The driver couldn’t get any nearer because of the parked vehicles. She paid the fare and, after gathering a multitude of packages in both hands, turned to walk the last few yards home. She frowned; there seemed to be a crowd of people around the entrance, some kind of accident, fire or...

Before she could complete the thought, a voice yelled, “There she is!” and she was surrounded by dozens of people. A microphone was stuck inches from her face, cameras flashed and she reeled back under the press of human bodies.

“Miss Stephens, the heiress?”

“Yes...no. I suppose so.” She was caught wide-eyed and stunned.

“How did you feel when Leon Gregoris was kidnapped?” “Is it true you sanctioned the payment of the ransom?”

The questions flew fast and furious, and Bea was completely out of her depth. “Upset, obviously. Yes. No.” She didn’t know what to say. She had never had any dealings with the press or television before, and she was horrified. Clinging onto her shopping bags, she stumbled through one of the most embarrassing half-hours of her life. Eventually she managed to battle her way to the foyer of her building, where mercifully the security guard let her in and firmly refused entry to the media.

By the time she reached her apartment, reaction had set in. She collapsed on the sofa, shaking in every limb, her parcels discarded unnoticed on the floor.
